At an affordable starting price of $32,780 that drops to $25,280 after taking advantage of federal tax incentives, Nissan has seen over 14,000 pre-orders for this economical and environmentally friendly vehicle. Owners can feel good about the zero emissions while enjoying Bluetooth capability, Sirius/XM satellite radio, energy efficient LED headlights, and roadside assistance. This sporty blue all electric car with its sleek aerodynamic design is set to redefine the auto industry.

The automobile industry has been responding to both consumer and government demands for increased fuel efficiency and reduced emissions in recent years. While most manufacturers were devoting their research and development to hybrid engines, combination gas/electric vehicles, Nissan was developing an all electric, zero emissions vehicle called the Nissan Leaf. With a December 2010 release date for Japan, Europe, and the United States, the 2011 Nissan Leaf is the world's first mass produced, affordable all electric vehicle.
The Nissan Leaf can seat five adults and features the latest in advanced IT connectivity and state-of-the-art wireless control capability. Customers can use mobile phones to monitor battery charging status and to activate functions such as climate control. The Nissan Leaf has a range of about 100 miles on a full charge and can reach a speed of over 90 miles per hour. It is powered by a lithium ion battery pack that can be charged in eight hours or less from a standard home outlet or charged to 80 percent capacity in less than a half hour from a 50kW commercial charger. Though now limited in number, municipalities and businesses are working to create commercial charging stations to meet anticipated demand.

The Leaf is the gateway to a brave new electric world from Nissan. This 5-seater, 5-door hatchback is the world's first, purpose-built, mass-produced electric car. It has a range of over 100 miles on a full charge claims Nissan, takes around 8 hours to recharge using 220-240V power supply and produces zero tailpipe emissions. Its low center of gravity produced sharp turn-in with almost no body roll and no understeer. The good news? It feels just like a normal car, only quieter.

As previously mentioned, the compact/subcompact segment has been a focal point at the New York auto show, and will only grow more competitive in coming years. Last week, the Nissan Leaf won World Car of the Year, speaking volumes to just how in touch product developers of Nissan are to current trends.
However, I was extremely disappointed with the unveiling of their new Versa. With 30 city/37 highway at an extremely low price of $10,990, the Versa is one of the least expensive new cars sold in North America today and it is obviously trying to bring on the heat to the South Korean brands.
The price, unfortunately, comes with with a price. The Versa suffers from a bland exterior that whimpers anonymity in addition to plastic composite touch points in the interior that conjure childhood memories of Fisher Price. The press conference ended with restrained and scattered applause. Oh no is right. This can't be good.
Lotus
Lotus caused one of the largest buzzes in recent memory when they simultaneously unveiled at the 2010 Paris Auto Show an unprecedented five unique products-- Lotus Eterne, Esprit, Elite, Elan and Elise.
Since the show, skeptics and fans alike questioned whether or not Lotus indeed had the ability, in finances and resource, to meet its promise. With the presence of the Lotus Esprit concept and some major suits, including industry icon, legend, and former GM vice chairman, Bob Lutz, who is now a part of the Lotus advisory board, the venue had everything one could need to inject confidence to the public.
Unfortunately, nothing in depth was ever brought to attention. Sure, the new Evora S and Evora IPS were unveiled but rather than running across sales figures, company performance outlooks, and product improvements, Lotus did little talking at all. Instead, they've brought promotional videos to out attention and followed up with an agonizingly long discussion of Lotus' IRL racing activities. Disappointingly, the only thing the promo videos revealed were gorgeous models in sheer bikinis walking around a Esprit concept while a remix of La Roux's "In for the Kill" played in the background. Don't get me wrong, I loved the video. But that wasn't why FPH came to the Auto Show.
Regardless of the state of the press conferences, it’s really the state of the industry overall that’s important. Current global climate along with legislative bills is forcing the automakers to push their engineering to the limit. While this was mostly seen in the fuel efficient small car sector this year, it applies to everything from SUVs to supercars. It is that excitement that fuels our enthusiasm for cars. That said, it is also a very good time to be a young car buyer.
Moreover, as significant manufacturers reported double digit sales growth in the past year, we can be confident that this won’t be our last NYIAS. After our first visit, we met many enthusiasts, both green and veterans of the industry, that have been gracious to us and embraced FPH. After all, an industry is nothing without its people and that's what made it even more special to be there. FPH is looking forward to cover more press events in the future and we hope to keep in touch with the friends we've made and to make new ones as well.

Here's how the World Car Awards jurors justified their vote:
“The Leaf is the gateway to a brave new electric world from Nissan. It feels just like a normal car, only quieter.”
Launched in 2004, the World Car of the Year competition assesses cars with the help of a panel of automotive journalists from Asia, Europe and North America.
“This accolade recognizes Nissan LEAF, a pioneer in zero-emission mobility, as comparable in its driving performance, quietness and superb handling to gas-powered cars,” said Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn. “And it validates Nissan’s clear vision and the values of sustainable mobility that we want to offer to customers around the world.”
Currently available in Japan, the United States and select European markets, the Leaf will be launched in other global markets in 2012. The EV is built at Nissan’s Oppama plant in Japan, with U.S. and UK manufacturing to follow in late 2012 and early 2013 respectively (in Smyrna, Tennessee and Sunderland).

“The new Versa Sedan stands out as the only expensive looking car in the segment – with a lot of eye power,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America.
“Its sculpted, dynamic proportions are modern without being gimmicky, projecting a much higher sense of design value than you might expect in a vehicle with a $10,990 starting M.S.R.P."
We’ll disagree with Castignetti assessment on the Versa’s exterior, but feel free to express your own opinion in the comments section below. Now, moving on to the interior, the Versa’s dashboard appears to be lifted straight off the Micra supermini with only some minor changes to the instrument panel layout and the switchgear.
While retaining the same 102.4-inch wheelbase and 66.7-inch width as the previous generation Versa Sedan, Nissan’s newcomer is 1.2 inches lower in height (59.6 inches) and 0.6 inches shorter in overall length (175.4 inches). According to Nissan, the Versa has more legroom than some mid and large size sedans such as the Lexus LS460, BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class., while offering a trunk volume of 14.8 cubic feet.
Power for the new Versa comes via a second-generation 1.6-liter HR16DE 4-cylinder engine rated at 109 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 107 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual transmission (1.6 S model only) and a next-generation Xtronic CVT transmission.
Nissan says fuel economy for the 2012 Versa Sedan is estimated at 30 mpg City, 37 mpg Highway and 33 mpg combined with the CVT transmission, and 27/36/30 mpg with the 5-speed manual gearbox.
As mentioned previously, the 2012 Versa Sedan will be priced from $10,990 (about €7,700 at the current exchange rates), with sales set to start in the summer.
